Play Reading Evenings
From August 2008 the Phoenix Players are going to hold regular six weekly play readings. These events
will be easy going, enjoyable evenings aimed at giving everyone, be they members of Phoenix Players
or not, the opportunity to read plays they may not have come across before or old favourites that
they haven’t looked at for some years.
It will be an informal evening held at the Phoenix Clubhouse and we will be offering tea
or coffee and biscuits halfway through the evening. The Clubhouse, for those who don’t know
it, is in the car park behind the Tramway Pub in Shipston Road, Stratford upon Avon.
The plan is to read a wide variety of plays through the year - broadly covering classics,
such as Ibsen, Wilde, Coward, Chekhov, the familiar pot-boilers such as Ayckbourn, Christie
and Ray Cooney and also some new plays, including those currently on tour or in the West End.
We would also like to read plays by local playwrights.
Anyone is welcome to come along to these evenings. If you are new to the area, or just new to
the group, this offers the opportunity to meet members of the Society in a friendly, relaxed
atmosphere. It is a chance to read without feeling the pressures normally associated with
drama club auditions! There is no charge for attending.
We hope that over time these evenings will develop into something more.It would be interesting
perhaps to have some discussion of the play after the reading; to talk about the characters
and why they reacted as they did; to learn more about the playwright.
Perhaps, we will eventually go on to hold workshops where we take scenes from a play to see
just how much can be got out of it.
That’s the plan. It would be wonderful if you could join us.
